One of the most troublesome and common skin care issues for many around the world is…acne! Hard to believe? Over 60 million nnAmericans suffer from acne and an estimated 20 million suffer from it severely enough to have lifelong reminders of it in the nnform of scarring. According to the AAD, acne is a skin disorder that affects all ages and both males and females. It can be nndebilitating, embarrassing, and a definite self-esteem crusher.
So what is acne? The textbook definition is a skin disorder that occurs when hair follicles become plugged with dead skin nncells and oil. This combination is responsible for allowing a bacteria called Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes) to flourish nninside the follicle instead of remaining on the skin’s surface. This begins a domino effect, the final stage of which is when the nnfollicle wall breaks down and all the bacteria “spills” to nearby skin, leading to lesions.
Acne is an inflammatory disorder, and it’s important to remember that while treating it. Anything you can do to reduce nninflammation will help acne to heal faster. The reverse is true as well: MAKING THE INFLAMMATION WORSE WILL MAKE THE ACNE nnWORSE.
So, let’s put some myths to rest:
Myth #1: Food causes acne.
nEating an overall healthy and nutritious diet will result in better looking skin.
Myth #2: Poor hygiene causes acne.
nWhile proper hygiene is important, acne is not caused by dirty skin.
Myth #3: Pop those pimples!
nDon’t you dare!! This may give you immediate gratification, but it actually makes the inflammation worse and will slow down the nnhealing process. Popping pimples pushes the inflammation further down, causing more redness and swelling, increasing the risk of discoloration and scarring, and – you guessed it – nncausing it to stay around longer.
Myth #4: Moisturizer breaks me out.
nPick moisturizing products wisely. Oily or acneic skin still needs hydration to heal and tolerate corrective skin care. Avoid nnheavy creams and focus on lotion or serum forms; they will feel fabulous…like giving your skin a drink of water!
Myth #5: The sun dries up my acne.
nNo, it doesn’t. Sun exposure will only irritate and dry out your skin (which will promote more oil) and cause premature aging. This nnbehavior will just lengthen the healing process.
Myth #6: Sunscreen causes acne.
nFinding an SPF that you love and will wear daily will save your skin later. The better your skin is protected while it is healing, nnthe less prone you will be to hyperpigmentation and scarring. Also, reducing the amount of heat the skin holds on to will nndiscourage excess oil production.
Myth #7, and the final for this blog post: Just let acne run its course.
nJust like any disease or condition, acne needs treatment. Getting the proper attention can allow you to minimize its effects and nncontrol the condition. Do not delay this process. Starting a proper personalized skin care and treatment plan will keep breakouts nnunder control and prevent scarring and pigmentation.
