Honestly, I was totally and completely sold at the age of 12. My mom took me to Lord & Taylor, a department store that was in the mall near our house, for a Clinique makeover. I remember how amazing my skin felt after the Clinique girl put on that purple bottle toner and yellow moisturizer. Keep in mind this was 24 years ago… always makes me smile when I walk by and see that not much has changed at Clinique. It all smelled good and made my youthful skin glow. Next came the makeup lesson and I was totally invested. Whatever she was selling, I wanted it. Looking back, it was certainly about the experience, the smell of the department store, being with my mom and feeling pretty. I knew that I wanted to make people feel that way when I grew up.
Fast forward 12 years and I had just completed a long two years of chemotherapy and radiation. I went to college for two years prior to being sick, but only because I wasn’t sure I could really make a “career” of being an esthetician. After the cancer, I realized that life is too short to pursue something that I’m not passionate about. I checked out a few schools in Kansas City and St. Louis and found myself most impressed with Merrell University.
Listening to my heart and going to esthetics school was one of the best decisions of my life. I love my job, I love this ever-growing field, and I LOVE making people feel good about themselves.
I’m writing this on the plane returning from Chicago and my sixth SkinMedica Advocate Summit. This year I was chosen to be one of the five women on the expert panel that presented at the meeting. It was a great experience and I was totally humbled by it. Kim and I had a chance to experience the newest product that will be launching in the next few months… very exciting, stay tuned for details. The summit is one of my favorite things about my job. It is a great networking event and an opportunity to hear what other practices from around the country are doing. I’m always reminded how innovative and results-driven SkinMedica is as a company.
